Webinar Series on the International Day of the World´s Indigenous Peoples “Custodians of Biodiversity”

On the occasion of the International Day of the World´s Indigenous Peoples, which is observed by the United Nations each August 9th, the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project, in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Equator Initiative, the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), the Indigenous Women for Biodiversity Network of Latin America and the Small Grants Programme (SGP), will host the Webinar Series “Custodians of Biodiversity”, from August 4th to August 7th 2020.

This Webinar Series aims to highlight the indigenous peoples contributions on biodiversity conservation through governance mechanisms and ABS actions. Additionally, the webinar series intends to offer a space for indigenous peoples to exchange and discuss the emerging challenges on biodiversity management within ABS, and their contribution to the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

The webinars will offer the option for simultaneous interpretation from English to Spanish. The recordings of the sessions will be shared through the Global ABS Community.
Tools to Promote Bioeconomies Through ABS at the Community Level
When: August 4th, 2020, 9 AM (GMT -5)

Topic: The importance and role of Biocultural Community Protocols (BCPs). What is next after BCPs? How to promote beneficial agreements once the BPC is in force? How to ensure the benefits shared improve the livelihood within a community? How to attract and build bridges with users of genetic resources? Other relevant tools of the Nagoya Protocol and their impact on bioeconomies: Prior Informed Consent (PIC), Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT) and ABS contracts.

Indigenous Women Leadership in Biodiversity Management
When: August 5th, 2020, 9 AM (GMT -5)

Topic: Indigenous women tend to be underrepresented in the negotiation of benefit sharing agreements, however, they play a key role in genetic resources management and traditional knowledge transmission from generation to generation. Why is it so important to halt this trend? How can ABS help in this regard? How to increase women participation in decision making processes at the community level? In this session, conducted in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation to English, we will discuss these questions.

Experiences that show how ABS can successfully link indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge to science in order to deliver products and goods for the well being of human kind with special focus on Asia-Pacific.
