72  Artists and Artisans from 18 States make it to the Final List

October 12, 2020. New Delhi/Hyderabad: The American India Foundation (AIF) has partnered with Hyderabad’s oldest and leading art gallery, Shrishti Art Gallery, to announce The Shrishti-AIF Grant in support of artists and artisans adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The sudden closures of art galleries and open markets, cancellations of art shows, and a halt to the purchases of artworks and handicrafts has severely undercut the economic livelihoods of artists, artisans and their communities. Shrishti Art Gallery and AIF had announced, earlier this year in the summer, an online fundraiser with artworks on sale from over 70 reputed artists, with 50% of the sales proceeds to be awarded to disadvantaged artists and artisans for supporting their costs of art materials.

The Art Show titled ‘Introspection’ included artworks by DLN Reddy, KG Subramanyan, Laxma Goud, Thota Vaikuntam, Sudhir Patwardhan, among others. Proceeds from the fundraiser that went towards the Shrishti-AIF grant amounted to Rs 18 lakhs. The Shrishti – AIF Grant is awarded to 72 well deserved artists/artisans from different states of India including Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The list of awardees is in Annexure A.

Over 1400 applicants from all over India participated in the Grant Application Process. In a highly competitive space of powerful works, evocative narratives and strong profiles, the jury comprising Lakshmi Nambiar (Owner, Shrishti Art Gallery), Krishnamachari Bose (Artist, Curator, President Kochi Muziris Biennale), and Rowena Mascarenhas (Director, Communication and Advocacy at AIF) shortlisted 72 disadvantaged artists and artisans for the grant.

As communities across the country continue to crusade against this deadly virus, a vast section of artists and artisans have lost all avenues of income in this uncertain future. We are deeply grateful to all the artists and patrons who generously contributed to this special endeavor” said Lakshmi Nambiar, owner of Shrishti Art Gallery.

During these unprecedented times of Covid-19 pandemic, it is inspiring to see the overwhelming response of support for artists and artisans from across the country. Art has occupied a special place during the pandemic, as it brings us closer together than ever before. AIF feels proud to be part of this initiative that underscores the importance of artists and artisans in our society. We’re deeply appreciative of this thoughtful and timely gesture by Shrishti Art Gallery and its owner, Lakshmi Nambiar” said Mathew Joseph, Country Director, AIF.
